Boulder County was one of the original 17 counties created by the Territory of Colorado on 1861-11-01. The county was named for Boulder City and Boulder Creek, so named because of the abundance of boulders in the area. Boulder County retains essentially the same borders as in 1861, although a small portion of its southeastern corner became part of the City and County of  Broomfield in 2001.

Situated in the north – central part of Colorado, Northwest of Denver, the western border of the County is the amazing Continental Divide. The eastern half of the County is beautiful rolling plain farmlands, and the western half is mountainous terrain.

The territory within Boulder County first became part of the United States in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase. The first record of modern settlement in Boulder County dates from March 1859 where reference is made in a letter to the laying out of the City of Boulder. In 1861 the Colorado Territory was created with Boulder being one of the 17 counties represented in the first Territorial Assembly. Native Americans were the first inhabitants of the County. They were followed by settlers, gold miners, farmers, coal miners and traders.

The Flatirons are rock formations in Boulder, Colorado consisting of flatirons. There are five large, numbered Flatirons ranging from north to south (First through Fifth, respectively) along the east slope of Green Mountain, and the term “The Flatirons” sometimes refers to these five alone. Numerous additional named Flatirons are on the southern part of Green Mountain, Bear Peak, and among the surrounding foothills.

The Flatirons were named by pioneer women after the flat, metal irons used to press their clothes. Source: Wikipedia

Western Painted Turtle

Made a new friend today in Boulder County Colorado.

The western painted turtle was designated the official state reptile of Colorado in 2008 thanks to the efforts of Jay Baichi’s 4th grade class. The 4th graders began the process to have the Western painted turtle designated as the Colorado state reptile in 2007. The next year students completed the necessary legal steps and Governor Ritter signed HB 08-1017 on March 18, 2008 naming the western painted turtle as Colorado’s reptile symbol.

Jay Baichi’s two classes (2007-2008) researched Colorado reptiles and decided that the Western painted turtle (a common sight around many Colorado ponds and lakes) was most representative of Colorado reptiles.

The painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) is the most widespread native turtle of North America. It lives in slow-moving fresh waters, from southern Canada to Louisiana and northern Mexico, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Within much of its range, it is the most numerous turtle. The turtle is the only species of the genus Chrysemys, which is part of the pond turtle family Emydidae. Fossils show that the painted turtle existed 15 million years ago, but four regionally based subspecies (the eastern, midland, southern, and western) evolved during the last ice age.

The adult painted turtle female is 4-10 inches  long; the male is smaller. The turtle’s top shell is smooth and oval without a keel (ridge) on the top. Its skin is olive to black with red, orange, or yellow stripes on its extremities. The subspecies can be distinguished by their shells: the eastern has straight-aligned top shell segments; the midland has a large gray mark on the bottom shell; the southern has a red line on the top shell; the western has a red pattern on the bottom shell.

The turtle eats aquatic vegetation, algae, and small water creatures including insects, crustaceans, and fish. Although they are frequently consumed as eggs or hatchlings by rodents, canines, and snakes, the adult turtles’ hard shells protect them from most predators except alligators and raccoons. Reliant on warmth from its surroundings, the painted turtle is active only during the day when it basks for hours on logs or rocks. During winter, the turtle hibernates, usually in the muddy bottoms of waterways. The turtles mate in spring and autumn; between late spring and mid-summer females dig nests on land and lay their eggs. Hatched turtles grow until sexual maturity: two to nine years for males, six to sixteen for females.  Adults in the wild can live for more than 55 years.

Field of Freshly Baled Round Hay Bales in Boulder County Colorado

A field of Freshly Baled Round Hay Bales.

Many farmers, particularly those who feed large herds, have moved to balers which produce much larger bales, maximizing the amount of hay which is protected from the elements. Large round  bales come in two types, round and square. “Large Square” bales, which can weigh up to 1,000 kilograms (2,200 lb), can be stacked and are easier to transport on trucks. Round bales, which typically weigh 300 to 400 kilograms (660-880 lb), are more moisture-resistant, and pack the hay more densely especially at the center . Round bales are quickly fed with the use of mechanized equipment.
