Long Lightning Bolt Across American Oil Well Country Sky

Long Lightning Bolt Across American Oil Well Country Sky

Long run lightning bolt soaring across the sky with oil well pump jack and two communication towers. USA American flag patriotic background.  Part of the America The Beautiful Fine Art Photography Series at www.BoInsogna.com Fine Art Photography Gallery.

Each second there are 50 to 100 Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Strikes to the Earth world-wide. Most lightning strikes average 2 to 3 miles long and carry a current of 10000 Amps at 100 million Volts.  The temperature of a typical lightning bolt is hotter than the surface of the Sun! A big lightning bolt striking the ground might seem be hundreds of feet across, but in actuality the current channel is generally not much thicker than a pencil.

Rocky Mountain Autumn Storm

 Rocky Mountain Autumn Storm

This is the very first image shot and out of my camera from my Autumn 2013 trip that started with a scary early morning drive over the pass and through the tunnel on I-70 and then south to Leadville.  The snow was beautiful with the colors but the driving in it was not so fun.  Anything can happen this time of year in the Rockies.

Thunderstorm Thunderhead Boulder County Colorado

Written By: bouldercountyphotographer - Oct• 11•13

 Thunderstorm Thunderhead Boulder County Colorado

Colorful thunderstorm thunderhead lit up with lightning bolts striking in east Boulder County Colorado.  Not all lightning forms in the negatively charged area low in the thunderstorm cloud. Some lightning originates in the top of the thunderstorm, the area carrying a large positive charge. Lightning from this area is called positive lightning.

Positive lightning is particularly dangerous, because it frequently strikes away from the rain core, either ahead or behind the thunderstorm. It can strike as far as 5 or 10 miles (8 or 16 kilometers) from the storm, in areas that most people do not consider to be a lightning-risk area.

During a thunderstorm, each flash of cloud-to-ground lightning is a potential killer. The determining factor on whether a particular flash could be deadly depends on whether a person is in the path of the lightning discharge.

In addition to the visible flash that travels through the air, the current associated with the lightning discharge travels along the ground. Although some victims are struck directly by the main lightning stroke, many victims are struck as the current moves in and along the ground.

If you can hear thunder, you are within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of a storm—and can be struck by lightning. Seek shelter and avoid situations in which you may be vulnerable.

Use the 30-30 rule, when visibility is good and there is nothing obstructing your view of the thunderstorm. When you see lightning, count the time until you hear thunder. If that time is 30 seconds or less, the thunderstorm is within six miles (ten kilometers) of you and is dangerous. Seek shelter immediately.

The threat of lightning continues for a much longer period than most people realize. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before leaving shelter. Don”t be fooled by sunshine or blue sky!

Most lightning deaths and injuries in the United States occur during the summer months, when the combination of lightning and outdoor activities reaches a peak. People involved in activities such as boating, swimming, fishing, bicycling, golfing, jogging, walking, hiking, camping, or working outdoors all need to take the appropriate actions in a timely manner when thunderstorms approach.

 Spider Web Of Diamonds

Went out today to see what I could shoot on the Great Colorado flood but found out very quickly I could not get any where because of all the roads closed around me.  Sometimes you find the coolest things right in your front yard.  An abstract view of Lily leaves with a spider that made it web across and the last of the raindrops from the great Colorado flood with diamond reflections.

Tomatillos

Written By: bouldercountyphotographer - Oct• 03•13

 Tomatillos

Tomatillo (toe-ma-tee-ohs) – Tomatillos are also called “tomate verde” in Mexico (which means green tomato) and are considered a staple in Mexican cooking. The tomatillo is a plant of the nightshade family, related to the cape gooseberry, bearing small, spherical and green or green-purple fruit of the same name. Tomatillos originated in Mexico, and are a staple of that country’s cuisine.

The fruit of the tomatillo is green and about the size of a large cherry tomato. The inside is white and meatier than a tomato. They grow to maturity inside of a husk. They can range in size from about an inch in diameter to the size of apricots. They are covered by a papery husk which may range from the pale green color of the fruit itself to a light grocery-bag brown. The husks are inedible and should be removed before use.
